Grace Period
What about the Grace Period?
Customers that buy Cubase 6/6.5 and Cubase Artist 6/6.5 (full retail, EDU and updates/upgrades) from October 25, 2012, qualify for the grace period. This means that they will receive a free online update to Cubase 7 or Cubase Artist 7, respectively, when the 7 update becomes available. Please note that Steinberg is not delivering any Updates / Upgrades since the launch of Cubase 7 on November, 14th.

Functionality - MixConsole
Since this looks liks such a great overhaul of the mixer, with replaced(?) eqs, channel strip etc, (and also concerning the new variaudio engine) how will our older projects open in C7?
Older projects will load and sound like they sounded in Cubase 6/6.5. The projects are not automatically converted to use the new Channel Strip.
Which new plugins are getting introduced? Or are it the "old" VCM series?
We introduce Tube Compressor, Brickwall Limiter, Voxengo Curve EQ and new versions of Vintage Compressor and MixConvert. The Chanel Strip includes optimized versions of existing plug-ins and new Modules such as Tape / Tube saturation.
Are the settings for a/b comparison saved with the project? Is it for VST2 and VST 3 plug-ins?
A/B comparison is for VST2 / VST3 plug-ins and the settings are saved with the project.
Has VST Bridge been updated?
There are no changes to VST Bridge in Cubase 7.
What about the Channel Strip routing?
You can freely change the order of Channel Strip modules and switch the Insert Rack post or pre the Channel Strip block. The LPF and HPF is placed always at the begin of the signal chain.
Quick Controls now adjustable from mixer?
Yes, finally control QCs directly in Mix Console for all channels at once- Configure your own favorite channel parameters in MixConsole!
Will the control room window still be available as a smaller floating window or is it only available on the mixer now?
Yes, you can open it MixConsole or as separate window on its own.
Can you drag the mixer channels to re arrange them?
No, you can't. However, the good news is that the tracklist and the channels in the mixer are and stay in sync (except if you make use of the zone feature or disable visibility for certain channels). You can also easily copy channels or sections of channel parameters in MixConsole via drag and drop.
Notes on channels in MixConsole?
Yes, make those notes directly on any channel!
What about those new Grouping & FX Channel options?
It is now possible to create a Group from the currently selected channels and directly connect them to that new group. The same goes for creating FX channels, including selecting of the actual effect which should be inserted in the FX channel.
Is the input gain still there in MixConsole?
Sure it is and right beneath it you'll find the new LPF and HPF.
RMS/EBU R-128 metering?
Yes, you get dedicated RMS and EBU R-128 metering. For RMS Cubase 7 offers various scale options. As you can open and configure up to three MixConsoles at once, you can also see RMS and EBU R-128 metering at the same time!
Still no plug-in manager?!
Unfortunately not, but be assured, it will come in a future update.
Functionality - Chord Track
How is the Chord Track populated with Chord events?
You can create Chord events for the Chord track in three different ways:
a) Automatically from existing MIDI data (for example the piano track)
b) You pencil them in manually with handy chord toolbox
c) You simply record the chords from MIDI in directly to the Chord track
Handy sidenote: It's now also possible to enter Chords directly in the Key Editor (resulting in usual note events and totally independent of the Chord Track).
What can you do with Chord Track? Is it for kids?
When you have a the Chord track filled with the proper Chord events, Cubase can use this Chord information for various handy things:
a) MIDI tracks as well as audio tracks with VariAudio parts on it, have a new flag "Follow Chord track" and a lot of Options on how to follow. If it is set, all changes you make to a Chord events (like exchanging C maj with D min), will be reflected automatically in all MIDI and VariAudio parts that play at the Chord events range.
Usually you would need to manually edit all parts in the Key or VariAudio Editor and shift the notes manually. You could not simply transpose by 2 semitones as the third changes from maj to min.
b) The Chord information can also be used to harmonize VariAudio parts. The classic example would be a Lead Vocal voice which get alt, tenor, soprane voices added.
c) You can even record a MIDI track and hitting C2 all the time with the right groove and then set the Follow Chord track options in a way that automatically converts the single C2 MIDI note to 3 or 4 notes that build the Chord that that the Chord track provides at the current song position.

And what about Chord Assistant?
Instead of a defined Chord you can also create so called X events on the Chord track. The Chord Assistant is able to suggest Chords for all X events it founds. For example you can create your verse and chorus and reserve 6 bars in between with X events for the bridge. Chord Assistant will suggest you several variations of harmonically correct bridging chords - even if the verse is in C major and the chorus in A major, so that a proper modulation is needed. It can do more than that and has tons of options.
Functionality - General
Does this version include the ASIO compensation for midi recording that was mentioned so that 'what you hear is what you get' as someone mentioned a few months ago?
Yes, the latency compensation for MIDI recording is there! You can activate it for each MIDI track.
Can you filter tracks using the track search? Say I only wanted to see tracks with the word fx in it can i search and toggle visibility?
You can filter the channels in MixConsole but not the tracks in the tracklist (will be added in a future update, didn't make it in time). Though you can search in the tracklist and directly jump to the track.
And what about the audio engine. Is it the same as 6 and 6.5?
The audio engine is basically the same but highly optimized with the ASIO Guard feature.
Would CC121 be compatible with Cubase 7 ?
Sure, it will be compatible.
Multitrack Freewarping?
There are no news regarding phase-stable multi-track freewarping in Cubase 7. However, warping several tracks at once such as a drum track alongside a bass and guitar track is working like in Cubase 6.5.
Show Hide Tracks in Project View?
While we introduce a new visibility management for channels in MixConsole, it is not possible show / hide tracks in the Project page for now. We are aware that this is a highly requested feature and will do our best to implement it in a future Cubase version.
Can I finally color the whole track header in the track list instead of just this tiny block at the left side?
Not yet, but you will be able to do so with one of the first maintenance updates!
Can I display track icons on the track header in Project window as well?
Yes!
I thought instrument tracks go multi-out and multi-in in Cubase 7 and are unified with the VSTi rack??!!
